On the southern side of our old weatherboard house are two rooms that used to be part of the veranda and sleep out. They are odd shapes, long and not very wide. They were converted probably sometime in the 70s or 80s. One room was done properly, you know with insulation in the walls and ceiling and nice smooth plasterboard walls. The other room still has the original thick veranda pillar running up one wall, green bubble glass windows and timber veranda decking for the floor. Oh and no insulation. It was constantly cold, damp and awful. For the past 6 years it has been used only for storage.

We have been slowly but surely renovating that room so that the two older boys can move into it. The ceiling has been lined with thick insulation and the walls have been scrubbed and painted white. All that is left know in new floor coverings and we will be ready for the furniture.

Because the room is narrow the boys will be in bunk beds (hand me downs from their Dad). So for that reason my mind has been consumed with all things bed linen. I know what I don't want, cartoon characters (no, not even Lego), bright or busy colour and pattern, and I don't want their beds to be matchy matchy. Which is exactly what you get if you look in the linen section of major department stores.

I want to be able to change things up a bit as they get older and their tastes change but not have to spend lots of money. My solution is plain neutral sheets and quilt covers, but mix things up with really cute pillow cases and blankets. Of course I turn to online and where else do you find a huge selection of cute and original pillowcases?...Etsy!

Above is just a small collection of the pillowcases I found. I really love all of them but I think my favourite would have to be the Glow In The Dark Constellation Moon Phases by Grandiflora Textiles or Woodland by Ohlittlerabbit or  the Reindeer Antlers by Erinnies.

Help me decide. What's your favourite?

Little Stinkers {Natural Carpet Deoderiser}

139

I like to use natural cleaning products at home. Partly because I don't want to expose my kids to all sorts of potentially nasty chemicals. Partly because I really hate the artificial smells of store bought cleaners and partly because of the effects on the surrounding environment. But mostly because I'm cheap, although I think it is the fashion to call oneself frugal. I love being able to throw together a big batch of cleaner for cents rather than spending a bulk of our grocery bill on cleaners, that way I have more money to spend on important things like new shoes. Hooray for frugality!

From time to time I thought I would share my own recipes and tips for cleaning with natural, homemade cleaning products. Here is the first, an easy and economical natural carpet deodoriser.

Natural Carpet Deodoriser.

Fact - Children are smelly and they generally smell up anything that they come in contact with. Like my lounge room rug.

Fact - Commercial carpet deodoriser does not smell pretty and is a big waste of money.

Fact - It is super easy to make your own.

Ingredients

1/4 cup corn flour

1/4 cup bicarb soda

5 drops of your favourite essential oil. (Optional). I like eucalyptus or lemon for their fresh clean fragrance. Vanilla essence will also work.

Method

In a bowl combine all ingredients. Stirring until will combine.

Put mixture in a sieve; sprinkle the mixture evenly over the carpet. Leave it for an hour. Vacuum up well.

Do a little spot test on an inconspicuous part of the carpet if you are unsure.

You can make a bigger batch and store for later but the essential oils will lose some potency.
